Purpose In the sealed atmosphere of a shuttle or station, managing waste and debris is a constant consideration. To return to Earth for study, even garbage must be stored, and without much room to spare, some times things must be jettisoned. NASA is extremely careful to control and catalog everything in orbit- even their garbage.
