Description 36" X 14" X 8" model of three rockets. Tallest rocket measures 36" X 4". Two side rockets measure 21" X 4". Base is black plexiglass which measures 8" X 14". Base has one small metal NASA label, 1" X 4.5", that identifies Marshal Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama, Graphics and Models Branch, Advanced Launch System, Scale 1:100. Item is in very good condition.

Purpose The Advanced Launch System project was a collaborative effort between the United States Air Force and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to deliver payloads into orbit. This project ran from 1987-1989 and was seen as a pre-support project for the Star Wars Ballistic Missile Defense System.

Description 22" X 8" model of three rockets. Tallest rocket measures 22" X 3". Two side rockets measure 10.75" X 2". Base is black plexiglass which measures 5" X 8". Base has one small metal NASA label, .88" X 4.25", that identifies Marshal Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama, Office of Public Affairs, ALS 220K Vehicle, Scale 1:200. Item is in good condition.

Model, Ranger 1/8 Scale

Description 12.5 x 4.75" Ranger model is attached to a plaque. It features a square base with two blue solar panel wings. Also attached is a satellite dish. The plaque features the name "Ranger" on it as well as several identification numbers used by NASA. The model does show some use present most likely due to its age. Item is in very good condition.

Provenance Shipped from LBJ Space Center in Houston, Texas. Currently being held in Orland Park Public Library. Model not used for flight but have been used for laboratory purposes. Part of order #10.

Purpose Ranger Spacecraft were designed to take close-up pictures of the Moon’s surface at impact. Nine Ranger spacecraft were built, but only Ranger’s 7-9 were successful in taking pictures of the moon.

Model, Satellite 1/2 Clear Globe

Description 16.5" diameter clear half globe. Dome's projection is 8.5". Globe has green plastic border that is in pieces. It flakes off periodically. Notations on globe are black and blue and are backwards. A 6.5" hole is in the center of the base. Item is in average condition.

Purpose Manufacturer is not indicated on piece and no explanation has been found for its use. The best that can be surmised is that the piece was used to project images on a screen or ceiling to gauge satellite trajectories.

Model, Satellite, Alouette

Description 12" X 8" model of the Alouette Satellite. Satellite is blue and white, 5" in diameter with 4 antennae. Base is 8" X 8" X 5/8" black lucite. Black label: "Alouette 1/8 Scale." Second label: "MSFC 76339." Third label: "United Industries, Inc. Everett 49, Massachusetts. Item can become disconnected from the base. Exercise care when using for display. Item is in good condition.

Purpose The Canadian satellite program, Alouette was developed to study upper atmosphere, particularly the ionosphere. Other experiments included were; the measurement of cosmic noise, radio emissions and energetic charged particles. Alouette launched on September 29, 1962 making Canada the third country to utilize satellite technology.

Model, Satellite, Mariner

Description 14" X 18" model of the Mariner satellite fully extended and open. Blue solar panels measure 7.5" X 3". Tower measures 14" X 8". Dish measures 5.5 in diameter. Model's color is bronze, silver, and black with a black slate circular base measuring 14" in diameter. Item is in used but good condition.

Purpose Mariner satellites were a series of 10 individual satellites/missions designed to gather information about Venus and Mars. The launch date for this project was July 21, 1962. The mission completed late in 1973 with Mariner 10. Our model most closely resembles Mariner 10 but no indication of that exists on the model.

White lettering displaying #858647 & SPACE SHUTTLE ORBITER. Two silver buckles & black handle. 14" X 9.5 X 5.5 white & black scale model of Discovery space shuttle. Black on bottom, white with black edges on top. Discovery label on right wing, USA and flag on left wing. Silver triangle rockets. Blue windows. Black and Silver nose. Interior opens, empty inside with silver doors. Has NASA label. 8" X 6" X 8" Black stand with black and silver sticker with the label SCALE 1:100 NASA SPACE SHUTTLE ORBITER. 6.5" white bendable wire with silver ends. 2" silver and gold screw. Item is in good condition.

Purpose Discovery is a space shuttle orbiter that was launched on August 30th 1984 to deploy three communication satellites. Discovery has had more than 30 successful missions. During its launch, the Discovery was successful in completing science experiments, carrying crew to certain locations, and placing satellites where they were needed. The shuttle was named after past exploration ships.

Model, Telestar 1/8 Scale

Description 4" spherical Telestar model with blue squares covering a majority of the item/artifact. These squares are presumably modeled after solar panels. It is light in weight and runs about 1/8th scale to the actual Telestar. Model is in good condition.

Provenance Shipped from LBJ Space Center in Houston, Texas. Currently held at the Orland Park Public Library NASA Special Collection. This is item/artifact is 1/8th scale model. Not used in flight but probably important to the planning and lab work of the Telestar program. Part of order #10.

Purpose The Telestar was the world’s first satellite, and was launched on July 10th, 1962. During its lifetime, the Telestar transmitted over 400 telephone calls, telegraphs, and TV programs. The satellite worked until November of 1962 when the electronics malfunctioned due to the effects of radiation.
