Description 5.38" X 1.25" X 1.75" black and clear horizontal lens apparatus. Has one black knob on the front with retractable cord. One .5" white piece of tape residue located on the box section to the left. White lettering on the item, "Polaroid F112." Three alternate lens are located to the right. Carrying case is black with dimensions: 7" X 4.25" X 1.75". It has one continuous black zipper around three of the four sides. The inside of the pouch is lined with black polyester flannel and grey foam. The foam has a cut-out shape of the lens. The lens apparatus slots into the cut-out snuggly. Inside the flap of the pouch are three stickers: one .75" green dot, "60/3," one 2.63" X 1" green label, "ARTIFACT ROUND: PHOTOGRAPHED AND VERIFIED AUGUST 2018," one 4" X 2" white label with NASA catalog information. Item is in very good condition.

Purpose This accessory fits on the front of Spectra/Image Polaroid cameras. It aids in macro photography. Referenced in the Polaroid Spectra manual, 1986, this accessory and camera are still in production.

Description 4.75" X 4.75" blue Schneider Kreuznach box with label; 17mm, Fl.4, S/N 25002314-0014, P/N 22-010579 written on a white label on the side. Inside box are two cardboard and plastic barricades and one lens. Black lens with black lens cap; Schneider Optik, Kreuznach molded in cap. Silver label on side of lens; Type: XNP 1.4/17-0103, Serien-Nr: 25002314-0014. One pink plastic bag included with orange stamp; 374. Item is in very good condition.

Purpose Astronauts need high quality camera equipment to capture photographs from space. During STS-121 mission, the Discovery Space Shuttle utilized Schneider-Kreuznach lens to capture photos of equipment, shuttle tiles and to stream high resolution video.

Microphone, Boom Assembly

Description 3" Black 3 wire with flat black cap. Has label; SED16102321-307, S/N 5062. Includes two tags; one buff and one red. Looks like the microphone is broken from another existing piece that is not included. Item is in fair condition.

Provenance Shipped from LBJ Space Center, Houston, TX. Broken on 7/23/09, taken out of commission on 4/22/10. Item was part of the Shuttle program but was not flown. Currently held in the Orland Park Public Library NASA Special Collection. Unit barcode and archival box are shared with Battery Pack Compartment.* Part of order #4.

Purpose Boom microphones are worn by astronauts for communication. Fitted caps are worn which have a listening piece in the ear and a boom microphone near the mouth for speaking. The microphone is part of the Communications Carrier Assembly. This is worn under an astronaut’s helmet.

Description Blue metal electronics box with two white buttons, XMIT and ICOM labels. White label with "USA, United Space Alliance, Title: Microphone, Part No.: Hand-Held, Serial: 95-014571-01, 01007, NAS9-20000, Space Flight Operations, Contract" written on front. Yellow and white velcro patches on back of blue box. Black microphone protruding 2.75" from box. White cord, 7' and 8" long with eight-pin plug on the end. Black velcro holds cord in coil. Item is in good condition.

Description 6.25" X 3.75" Blue gabardine wrist band with white strap and Velcro closures. 1.5" X 2.75" X .75" Monitor Velcro-ed to the band. Monitor is silver colored metal with two stickers; round red and Class III, Not for Flight. Printing on the side; SDD 46111312-302, S/N 1001. Inventory sticker on the opposite side of the wrist band. Included small clear plastic bag. Item in is very good condition.

Purpose Light monitors are used for a variety of experiments conducted in space. Straps are sometimes used to affix them to an astronaut’s person to monitor and log the amount of ambient light they experience in space, especially to help ensure a healthy sleep cycle and general mental and physical health.

Description L 7.5" x H 3.75" x D 1.5" Black plastic Sony Walkman Professional Stereo Cassette-Corder with standard Play, Stop, Pause, Rewind, and Fast Forward buttons at bottom, along with a volume slider for headphones (not included). The front face features a tape window (which has fallen away from its dried-out adhesive), a roll-over timer, and indicators to show the type of tape. Non-factory additions are Velcro strips on the front, back, and left sides, with a strap between the left and back, and a 22" woven brown string to attach the Walkman by a metal clip. Item is in good condition.

Purpose Before most technology started moving towards digitization (and even for a short time afterwards), magnetic tapes were the prevalent method for storing data, especially audio. Ordinary tape recorders were used to record all manner of sound in space, from mission logs, to experiment results, to personal audio diaries.

Straps, Cable Wrist

Description Two straps are held by the library but as they are identical, the description will discuss one. 7.5" X .75" maroon, grey and black elastic wrist strap. One 1.25" X 1" black plastic and metal adjustment piece with hinge is fixed around elastic. The top part of the metal is a snap. One 2" silver colored metal clip is included with the strap. One 29" black cord is included with the strap. On one end is a female connector and on the opposite end is a male connector. The middle of the cord is coiled. One 6" X 5" clear plastic bas holds all three artifacts. It has two white identification stickers with numerous barcodes and information in black. Please refer to photos. All items included are in very good condition.

Purpose The performance test unit was hardware aboard a space flight that could be used to measure mental activity. This data was collected for scientific research. Testing with the unit included logging of sleep and wake times, auditory reaction times, and logs of questionnaires.
