Purpose This piece appears to be the upper arm portion of a spacesuit from the Apollo missions. Spacesuits, published by the Smithsonian identifies our pieces as A5-L – Apollo Prototype, ILC Industries, 1965, Catalog # 1977-0355-000, see page 72 for full suit. The upper arm is one part of a multi-layer and multi-part suit. Nasa’s Extravehicular Activity Mobility Units webpage states, "The arm assembly contains the shoulder joint and upper arm bearings that permit shoulder mobility as well as the elbow joint and wrist bearing." According to NASA’s Learning About Spacesuits website, spacesuits are not usually custom-made for spacewalking but the upper arm portion of the suit can come in different sizes.

Purpose Group Achievement Award states: Presented to Thermo Electric Holding Facility Team. For demonstrating superior work and possessing a "can-do" attitude which allowed for the successful launch of the TEHOF fan on STS-81 resulting in the resolution of an on-orbit malfunction.

Interview with team members Rebecca Difard and Elizabeth M. Kalla resulted in the following information. The Thermo Electric Holding Facility (TEHOF) fan failed on MIR. The team had less than 4 hours to prepare a spare fan to be hand delivered to Ellington Field for Astronaut Peggy Whitson to fly to Kennedy Space Center for launch of the fan three days later. Had the team not found a replacement to transport, the mission would have lost science research and experiments. The team consisted of 20 members and included Elizabeth M. Kalla, Donald M. Schmalholz, and Rebecca Difard.
