Description 4" X 2" blue and silver crew patch. This patch was issued to Jim Halsell, James d. Halsell. The stitching includes Halsell's name along with a crest, wings and a star design. Item has some use but is in good condition.

Provenance Shipped from LBJ Space Center in Houston Texas. Currently Held at the Orland Park Public Library NASA Special Collection. Box contains both patch and pen. Not flown. Item is part of order #8-2.

Purpose The mission patch seen here would have been worn by Jim Halsell (full name, James Donald Halsell, Jr.). Jim is a retired colonel from the United States Air Force and former NASA astronaut. Jim has spent over 1250 hours in space and has piloted and commanded five flights to space; STS-74, STS-65, STS-101, STS-83, and STS-94. He has also served as NASA Director of Operations at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City Russia.

Purpose Most spacesuits have patches sewn on, representing different missions and countries. NASA attaches an American flag patch to most suits like the one seen here. EMU stands for Extravehicular Mobility Unit and is the type of suit this patch was made for and represents. Information regarding this patch was sparse. Purpose Ballpoint pens are specifically designed with space missions in mind: old fashioned rely on gravity for ink flow. The ink cartridge allows the pen to be used in microgravity, and the rubber band most likely kept the pen from floating away.

Provenance Photo of Apollo 12 crew; Charles Conrad, Jr., Richard F. Gordon and Alan L. Bean. Mission landed on the moon November 18th, 1969. Conrad was the third man to walk on the moon, Bean was the fourth. Gordon stayed in orbit. Shipped from LBJ Space Center. Currently held in the Orland Park Public Library NASA Special Collection. Display piece only, not flown. Part of order 15-3.

Purpose Apollo 12 was the second lunar landing. Crew included Charles Conrad, Jr., Richard F. Gordon and Alan L. Bean. Mission objectives were to " gather seismic, scientific and engineering data throughout a long period of time."
