Description 2.88" X 1.5" aluminum, half circle, with vertical spline and two screw holes. Inventory number etched on one end; SDD 39122966-301, S/N 1003. Includes pink plastic bag with three stickers; one NASA-JSC inspection tag, one white inventory tag with red stripes, one white inventory tag. Yellow tape closure. Item is in Superior condition.

Purpose The piece seen here is part of the brake assembly on the Orbiter Shuttle landing gear. The landing gear is controlled by the commander or pilot, and is used to land the Orbiter. The brake assembly aids in skid protection. The Assembly has nine discs, four rotors, three stators, a back plate, and a pressure plate.

Brief, LTA, TMG Assembly

Description 22" x 26" white brief assembly. Interior is tan material with a grid design and black lining visible at seams. Four overlapping pieces of wide fabric create the curve at the seat. There is a 3" x 8" pocket at the hip of the right leg. Velcro strips line both leg holes inside and out to secure to upper leg pieces. The was has three zippers arranged around the inside, and two reinforced 2.5" holes, front right and front left, through which straps could be secured. Sewn tag at back reads: ITEM LTA, TMG, BRIEF ASSY. PART NO. 0104-82589-19 SERIAL NO. 148 SIZE 02 15" CODE ID 74897 MFG 3/84 ILC-DOVER Item is in very good condition.

Purpose The brief assembly is a part of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit or EMU, more commonly known as a space suit. It covers the waist and upper thighs of the astronaut. Spacesuits used to be custom fitted for each astronaut, but today they are adjustable to multiple astronauts’ sizes. The piece shown here is one part of many layers needed to protect astronauts from the dangers of space.
