Category Shuttle Hardware

Description 4" X 3.75" grey with black rubber lever. One 1.25" white circular sticker is located in the center of item on one side, 45402, PACIFIC SCIENTIFIC CONTROL ASSY., RI/STSD CONTROL NO., ME 621-0077-0004, PART NO., 0101740-34, DATE OF MFG 04/93, SERIAL NO. 204." Six small smudges are located at the bottom. Opposite side has modeled information, "CONTROL INERTIA LOCK REEL, PACIFIC SCIENTIFIC CO, LOS ANGELES SAN FRANCISCO SEATTLE, HR 30141." One 11.75" X 10" clear plastic bag is included. Bag has numerous artifact identifying stickers attached. Opposite side has numerous blue marker notations. Refer to pictures. Item is in very good condition.

Purpose Referencing the U.S. Commerce Report, AN INVESTIGATION OF AUTOMATIC RESTRAINT AND BODY POSITIONING TECHNIQUES, December 1973, pg 15, explains the use of locking Inertia Reels with shoulder harnesses. Research of the earliest use of these items traced back to aircraft used in WWII. Our item is more current being manufactured 4/93.

Screwdriver, Cordless and Charger

Description 8.625" X 1.5" X 1.5" silver plastic and metal, cylinder-shaped tool. Velcro is wrapped around one half of the tool. Velcro has bits of white fabric stuck to it. Item has hinge in the middle. Between the Velcro and the hinge are two metal labels. The larger is .75" X .75", "OP/LK" indicating "Open/Locked." It is located to the left of splined switch. Below the larger label is a smaller label, .5" X 1" metal label, "T/L" indicating "Tighten/Loosen" located to the left of a basic toggle switch. One 4" X 2" white label is located on the battery side of the hinge. It is slightly torn. Label includes identifying information, see photo. 2.5" X .75" white label is located near the large label. This label includes identifying information. Included with the screwdriver is a charger and manual. The charger measures 4.5" X 2.625" X 2.38" black plastic box with 6' black cord attached. "AEG" is printed on the top next to a vented section of the box. Box has a hinged section for holding bits. One 1.5" diameter hole is located on the top to the left of vents. One 4" label is affixed to the cord near the plug. One 4" X .5" beige piece of velcro holds the cord folded. The manual measures 8.13" X 5.75" and is in full-color. It has 10 pages of instructions for using an "AEG Electric Rechargeable Battery Powered Screwdriver, EZ502 & EZ502-2. Screwdriver is in fair condition. The charger and manual are in good condition.

Seal, Lip

Description 5.63" diameter white plastic molded cover. Item includes a red washer and a JR imprint in the center. Pink plastic bag with two inventory tags and one white plastic opaque bag with an inventory bag are included. Item is in good condition.

Purpose This sort of plastic seal has a rubbery lip to keep the seal air tight, though external vessel seals must be much stronger to resist vacuum.

Description 4.5" X 3" X 2" hard clear plastic device with shaving head, cover, internal gears with bleck and chrome wingnut on back. Imprint in plastic, "Brevete S.G.D.G., Made in Monaco." Black vinyl case with metal zipper and torn seam included. Item is in very good condition.

Provenance Donated to the library by Orland Park resident, John R. Meister along with hard-copy internet history of the artifact. We have no evidence that the item was flown.

Purpose Although shaving systems were put into use during the Gemini mission they went relatively unused until the Apollo 10 mission. Our shaver model came into use around the Apollo 14 mission but there is no information concerning the use by NASA of our actual artifact.

Description Short sleeved, Navy blue knit shirt with collar and pocket. Five beige buttons; four on placket and one on pocket. Two patches are located on the right front of shirt; one is white with red NASA lettering, one is hexagonal with Challenger and STS-6 in red, Space Shuttle in the center, four astronauts names around the sides; Weitz, Bobko, Musgrave, Peterson. Shirt has a label on the inside with a P written in. Shirt is a size Medium. Includes a clear plastic bag with one sticker; 80740203630120, Shirt, Polo w/STS-6 Mission Patch, 1 ea. Item is in superior condition.

Purpose The shirt seen here belonged to astronaut Donald H. Peterson. Peterson served as a NASA astronaut from 1969-1984. The patch shown was for the STS-6 mission. STS-6 launched on the spacecraft Challenger. Peterson’s role included engineering support, machine interface and safety assessment. STS-6 conducted many experiments in materials processing, recorded lightning activities, deployed the first Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS-A), and activated three Getaway Specials

Purpose Crew members aboard a space shuttle select their clothing far in advance before they launch and go to space. They are given a limited supply of clothes. Workout clothes such as the shorts shown here would have been worn at most three days and then disposed of in a bag.

Blue label on each says, NO RINSE BODY BATH POUCH ASSY, Add 6 oz. hot water, 2 oz cold water P/N SED32103194-303. All items included are in superior condition.

Purpose Astronauts use rinse less soap, rather than be rinsed off with water. They simply dry off with a towel. This type of soap is similar to the soaps used in hospitals. Rinse-less soap has to be used because if water is used the water droplets will float away in the space station and possible harm electrical equipment.
